Spisovatelky June Hayward a Athena Liu měly společně zazářit jako dvě vycházející hvězdy — chodily do jednoho ročníku na Yaleově univerzitě, dokonce i knižní prvotina jim vyšla ve stejném roce. Jenže zatímco Asioameričanka Athena se stala nadžánrovou favoritkou literární scény, Junina kniha se nedočkala ani brožovaného vydání. Asi to je tím, že o tuctových běloškách nikoho číst nebaví.
A tak když se June stane svědkyní bizarní nehody, která vyústí v Atheninu smrt, bez rozmýšlení ukradne její čerstvě dopsané mistrovské dílo: experimentální román o přehlíženém podílu čínských dělníků na válečném úsilí Francie a Velké Británie během první světové války.
June však nedokáže uniknout Atheninu stínu a na povrch začnou vyplouvat důkazy, které by mohly s jejím (neprávem přisvojeným) úspěchem jednou provždy zatočit.
I have whiplash from this book. Interesting in some parts but none of the characters are really likeable and I really got to the point where I was just wishing the book is done. But I guess the story is meant to be unsettling.
I must stop believing hype and awards when it comes to books. This book features not a single likeable character. It finishes suddenly with no closure. A depressing read that constantly felt on the edge of a good story but never quite made it.

Creo que el thriller psicológico contemporáneo pega mucho más con el tipo de prosa rabiosa e implacable de Kuang. El comentario sociopolítico acompaña mucho mejor esta historia que Babel y, aunque se sigue atragantando de lo obvia que es, consigue hilvanarlo mejor con la trama.
This feels like every publishing twitter drama distilled into a single novel.
